gHy

Following my recent rather ‘busy’ collages I thought that I should create something more minimal that would be more to my usual taste.

After several days spent occasionally adding an element interspersed with long periods of gazing at it I eventually reached the decision that this one was also too ‘busy’, and so began a period of deconstruction.

I methodically removed and /or repositioned various elements until I reached the stage you see here, which I was reasonably pleased with, as a matter of interest I have taken 5 items away from this and I feel that it is much improved for it.

Very nice. What size is it? On paper? I enjoy your quote from Sean Scully on your side bar too.

Gaining perspective as to what element to retain and what to throw out is the hardest part of building a collage, digital or real. For we are in love with the materials we use , it is easy to lose sight of direction and I for one admit that it is rather difficult to eliminate to the essentials.

Thank you for sharing

Thank you Leslie, this is a digital collage and it would print well at any size up to about 18' x 12"

The process of de-construction, of abstracting elements so as to reach the essense of the thing itself is difficult to do. And yet, when done, seems much more rewarding. I find this when attempting to practice haiku -- a very humbling experience. I notice, too, that your writing matches your creation -- spare, calm, at peace with the process. Interesting!

Letting go or taking away what at first we thought was perfect...not easy and I find one of the most difficult but necessary tasks to collage making. Ah, what could have been and the acceptance of what is NOW...!
