Nightfall

Nightfall 24" x 28" mixed media on  canvas

I have just finished this painting, which is a sort of progression from my earlier effort ‘Fired Earth’ that I posted a few weeks ago.  I know that some may regard this as rather gloomy but I am quite pleased with it.

On Sunday I went to the ‘Watercolour in Britain’ exhibition at the Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery, which was very interesting, the gallery was very busy, more people than I have ever seen there before.  The exhibition covered a rich variety of subject matter by many of Britain’s finest painters from the eighteenth century through to the present day.

Norwich Market c 1950 Watercolour

Earlier works were by JMW Turner, John Sell Cotman, Thomas Girton and many others while later paintings were by such artists as Edward Burra, John Piper, Graham Sutherland and Anish Kapoor.

I have never attempted watercolour painting nor been particularly interested in it but I was intrigued by this exhibition and the wide variety of styles on show.

it's amazing that such details, precision can be achieved with the fluidness of watercolors...evasive to me, for sure.
and
lovin' your piece uptop.

The spareness of your work offers the viewer a strong sense of balance, even serenity. I believe we undervalue gray in art -- certainly Corot used its many hues to wonderful effect.

The exhibit must have been marvelous -- Turner's watercolors are unbelievable, a man ahead of his time.

Nothing gloomy about Nightfall...a place to lay one's head, a time to hear the silence and watch the stars...beautiful!

you are definitely a wabi sabi minimalist painter-- limited palette, subdued colors, textures- NOT gloomy at all--I see poetry.

I agree with the above comments, i think it's not gloomy at all. I love the deep, deep balck that draw me in, the soft grey that brings serene feelings, and the somewhat darker grey, that seems to have lots of colors in it and movement somehow.
Great painting!

I love gray - it makes me feel relaxed and comfortable. Your aesthetic sense is exquisite.

I haven't thought about it for a long time but your marvelous Nightfall makes me reflect on the statement 'let everything come out of the gray'...this piece is the antithesis of gloomy to me...and the textures...so 'of the earth'.

Nothing quite like wandering among the masters...sounds like a great museum day.
