Untitled 16" x 16" mixed media
Usually when I start a new painting I have a title in mind or at the very least I have settled on one before the painting is finished. In this case I had a firm idea of the colours and layout of the work but I still have not settled on a title so I will have to resort to ‘Untitled” for the time being.
Following the recent blog from the Katherine A. Cartwright Studio and the subsequent long discussion of the subject in the comments I am left feeling rather guilty. Perhaps I will add a title when inspiration strikes.

Seeing that the two major areas of the painting are in the opposite direction, I cannot help but think about land mass, considering all the earthquakes and major plate shifts throughout the earth occurring these last two months.
As for the colouration of the warm grey, I have to say that I like the variety of tones.

Titled or untitled I like this piece. I especially like the texture.
Maybe it doesn't need or want a title. You might number it (Rothko gave no title to his work :) )
i vote for untitled: always lets my mind go where it wants to when viewing...nice!
I just went over and read through Katherine's blog post on titles-- a very interesting topic -- with many opinions. I like your painting very much-- the colors remind me of the lingam rocks from India-- with the tan and red oxide colors-- love the minimal feel and textures add depth.
I may have suggested this before-- try brainstorming words-- like color words or texture words or even minimal words-- and a title will probably pop out-- as you probe deeper you will find that you have a reason why you painted this painting in such a minimal textured way-- you are drawn to this style for a reason.
I thoroughly enjoy your delicate lines and texture. I like the contrast of the dark smooth area with the textured earthy tones. Mesmerizing!

Hi Ian...your painting continues to speak to me and I enjoyed reading the post by katherine...I have often found that if I sit with a painting, quietly as if with a dear friend, the sound of what it is called rises up and surprises me...I like that process a lot.
