Number 4 Mixed media on framed panel |
This is the fourth attempt to make something of this panel (hence the title). The three previous efforts have been completely painted over although much of the texture here is inherited from the three previously aborted paintings.
I had begun to think that I would have to destroy this panel but in the end I am relatively happy with it.

Very strong work Ian. Great!
I like the texture really well.
Reworked paintings are often the best:)
This artwork really is expressive, great surface and colours.
Sometimes panels have to hang around a bit, then suddenly they "mature".
Thanks a lot for joining my blog, Ian.
Wonderful texture Ian and I love your division of space in this one.
Very nice piece, Ian. Remarkable in fact. It's amazing how much effort goes into making this kind of piece seem natural and right. This panel has ripened up well. You've done it. My sincere complements!
les publications sont rares, mais très belles!
I like it! Both the texture and the composition. Come to think of it the colour works for me too. I find that paintings often improve with their layers! ah such is the art life.
I love the textures built upon the past "previous efforts" which are exactly the efforts that it took to create this outstanding piece... eh?
The built up texture adds to the surface quality- and the minimal division of space and subdued colors-- very wabi-sabi!
In this case...the fourth time is the charm. I think this is sensational.
Looks cool to me!
Happy blogoversary :)
It's good that you didn't destroy it. These colors and textures work great together. There's a melancholy beauty in this painting.
I was chatting with one of my students last week about painting over old or unsuccessful paintings, and the wonderful textures that show through from the original attempt.
I'm glad you didn't destroy it. It turned out to be a very nice, strong piece. I love the calm colors.
Happy to have found your site today. Lovely work!
